Senior Visualization Designer A Team Player On & Off the Court

By Lea Crittenden

August 7, 2019

Ray Gromlowicz has had a passion for architecture and playing basketball since childhood. Every day, he gets to fulfill his passion for architecture at RS&H. Outside of work, he still gets to play basketball, including in a recent international competition.

“I became interested in 3D modeling during a drafting class in high school, but I didn’t set my sights on a career in visualization until college,” said Ray. “I remember watching Jurassic Park and thinking that if they could make a dinosaur look that good with computer-generated imagery, then they can do the same with buildings.”

Ray has been with RS&H since 2016 as a visualization designer and has worked his way up to senior visualization aviation designer. He has 26 years of experience in 3D animation, 3D modeling, 2D animation and video programming.

“Ray brings stability to our eight-member visualization team,” said Visualization Group Leader Timothy Witsil. “He also brings a killer jump shot!”

The Past Meets the Present

Ray played basketball at the University of North Carolina – Charlotte on scholarship and played professionally in France for four years. He is now on two local basketball leagues.

“I also play on various national basketball tournaments here in the U.S.,” said Ray. “I was selected from that group to become part of the All-Star U.S. team.”

In July, he was invited to participate in the 15th biennial Maxibasketball World Championship in Helsinki, Finland. He represented the 50-55 age group on the United States’ team. Ray participated in his first Maxibasketball World Championship in 2017.

The Maxibasketball World Championship started in 1991 and is held every two years. The championship hosts close to 6,000 participants from over 50 countries and is held in different countries all over the world.

At the end of the championship, it’s tradition for the teams to trade their jerseys with other countries as a souvenir.

“When I was there in 2017, I wanted to take home a Polish team player’s jersey as a souvenir, but they had already lost and it was hard to find them,” said Ray. “This year, they didn’t want to trade shirts because we won against them.”

The U.S. team started off strong in the tournament with an 82-41 win against Argentina, a 59-41 win against El Salvador, an 82-64 win against Brazil and an 81-78 win against Poland. They suffered a 16-point loss in the quarter finals against Italy. The US team ended up placing fifth overall after their 78-69 win against Brazil on August 3.

Team Player at Work

Ray, who helps head up the visualization group in Jacksonville, brings a team mentality to his work at RS&H.

He has a wealth of job knowledge and an understanding of RS&H that help him and his team on their many projects.

“He’s really helped me out in getting up to speed with the company and how things work within the company,” said architecture visualization specialist Daniel Oyieke. “He’s a good mentor.”

Ray makes sure his group is successful on all proposals and gives the client a product beyond what is expected.

“Ray is a great team player! He will always stop to ask if anyone needs any help,” said Visualization Production Manager Chris Gallop. “It doesn’t matter if he has a full workload or not.”

Life Outside of Work

When Ray isn’t playing international basketball, he loves to watch sports.

“I’m a die-hard Steelers fan,” said Ray. “I also like the Jaguars. When they play each other, it’s hard to cheer for one team or the other.”

When it comes to United States basketball and RS&H, he always knows which team he’s cheering on.
