RS&H Relay Teams Beat the Heat at BFAST Triathlon

Participating in a sprint triathlon in the middle of July in Florida is no easy feat. Convincing five other people to join in might be even more difficult.

But, always the motivator, that’s just what RS&H architect and senior design-build practitioner Rob Smedley managed to do. Smedley rallied five coworkers to join him in participating in the Beaches Fine Arts Sprint Triathlon (BFAST) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in July.

“I wanted to get to know more associates beyond my immediate sphere of influence and hopefully re-ignite some dormant desires to start a healthy lifestyle,” Smedley said.

The nine participants were organized in three relay teams – teams Riptide, Surf and Hammerhead – each armed with a swimmer, a bicyclist and a runner.

The annual BFAST Triathlon began in 1986 as an effort to raise funds for the free concerts and educational outreach programs offered to thousands of students in North Florida. The organization targets schools where limited funding has impeded the arts exposure all children should have.

The three RS&H teams enjoyed the friendly competition amongst each other and the other relay teams, but were most excited to finish the race and catch their breath in the shade.

“I loved being on the swim leg and watching our cyclists and runners enjoy the sun,” Smedley said.

Smedley’s driven, yet team-oriented mentality is the same approach he takes at work while supporting some of RS&H’s most important initiatives. Joining RS&H in February, Rob was enlisted to support the company’s growing alternative project delivery portfolio and contribute to the expansion of RS&H’s buildings-related work.

“I live to compete, but prefer sharing in the collective inspiration generated by a team, especially with my RS&H teammates,” he said.
