A Man of Many Hats – RS&H’s 2017 Young Professional of the Year

By Joe VanHoose

July 6, 2017

In his less-than eight-year tenure at RS&H, Ryan Vasile has made quite the name for himself. For many, it was no surprise to find out that he had earned the 2017 Young Professional of the Year Award.

Ryan is known for being “the type of guy you want on your team”, with a positive attitude and impeccable work ethic. As a bridge engineer, he has been an invaluable asset to the company. But, he has also become a a mentor and professor. He is certainly a man of many hats, and he has worn them all well.

As an engineer, Ryan’s talents have shone brightly as he took part in some of the company’s most prestigious projects. Most notably, he served on the Depot Avenue Rail-Trail Pedestrian Overpass, which received the Project of the Year Award in Structures from the American Public Works Association in 2014, as well as the Roy F. Kenzie Award of Best Transportation/Transit Enhancement from the Florida redevelopment Association Best Book Awards in 2013. In addition, it was named one of the “coolest” U.S. bike and pedestrian bridges by Bicycling Magazine in 2016.

Other significant projects for which Ryan has served as an engineer include Indian Street Bridge D/B, Wallops Flight Facility (NASA), the Disney Monorail Extension, First Coast Expressway, I-4, Pensacola Bay Bridge, Mathews Bridge Emergency Repair, and the Fuller Warren Bridge Widening. Ryan was also the Engineer of Record on the I-295 Express Lanes Design Build, which has a CPPR grade of 100.

In addition to being a master of his discipline, Ryan is a great team player, even helping to mentor other employees. Other associates look forward to being on his team not only for his expertise, but also his lighthearted demeanor, organizational skills, and big-picture thinking, which make the process fun and stress-free.

Ryan enjoys sharing his knowledge outside of the workplace as well. His dedication to structural design is best demonstrated in his service as an Adjunct Professor for the University of North Florida, where he has taught Design of Steel Structures as well as Introduction to Bridge Engineering. He also volunteers at the Florida Engineering Society MATHCOUNTS competition, leading up to its highest level of participation yet.

While he now teaches within higher education, Ryan is no stranger to the classroom. He holds several accreditations, with a Bachelor’s of Civil Engineering from the University of Florida and a Masters of Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University. Ryan holds memberships with the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer in both Florida and Georgia.

While it is hard to imagine having any spare time amidst these activities, Ryan has more than one musical hobby. He plays saxophone for the Jacksonville Symphony, has performed in “Richard Flutie and his Orchestra”, and to top off his talents, he sings for his church’s choir.

Ryan Vasile excels in every sense of the word. To call him “talented” and “hardworking” is an understatement. Still, we’d like to drive these points home when congratulating our new Young Professional of the Year – well done!
